Holden HQ Sandman (1974 - 1980)

The HQ Sandman became one of the symbols of 1970s Australian surf and custom culture. Offered as a panel van or ute, it mixed commercial-vehicle practicality with bright colours, stripes, bucket seats and a lifestyle image that felt young and distinctly local.

Its significance is cultural as much as mechanical. The Sandman belongs to the era of murals, beach trips and van culture, when a vehicle could be both transport and personal space. That makes it one of Holden’s most characterful creations from the HQ period.
