Honda EK9 Civic Type R (1997 - 2000)

The EK9 Civic Type R was the first Civic to wear Honda’s Type R badge, and it established the formula for lightweight, high-revving front-drive performance. Its hand-ported B16B engine, close-ratio gearbox, helical limited-slip differential and seam-welded shell gave it a level of focus unusual for a small hatchback.

Its importance is that it proved front-wheel drive could feel serious, precise and motorsport-influenced rather than merely practical. The EK9 became a benchmark for naturally aspirated Honda performance and remains one of the most respected Japanese hot hatches.
