Tesla Roadster (2008)
The 2008 Tesla Roadster is the pioneer that jump-started the modern electric vehicle revolution. Built on a heavily modified Lotus Elise chassis wrapped in a lightweight carbon-fiber skin, it paired a 53 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a 185kW electric motor driving the rear wheels. This combination delivered immediate maximum torque, propelling the targa-roofed sports car from 0 to 97 km/h (0–60 mph) in a rapid 3.9 seconds.
Its significance lies in completely shattering the stereotype of electric cars as slow, compromised utility vehicles. It was the first highway-legal, mass-production EV to use lithium-ion cells and achieve a range of more than 320 kilometres (200 miles) per charge. By proving that zero-emissions driving could be genuinely thrilling, this foundational car generated the crucial funding and engineering data that allowed Tesla to build its future mainstream lineup.
