Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird

The SR-71 Blackbird was born from Lockheed Skunk Works secrecy and Cold War reconnaissance demands. Developed from the A-12 lineage, it flew at extreme altitude and around Mach 3, using speed and height as its primary defence. Its titanium structure, special fuel and thermal expansion issues made it unlike ordinary aircraft in almost every respect.

Few aircraft look as fast while standing still. The SR-71’s black finish, chines, long nacelles and needle-like planform turned engineering necessity into visual legend. It remains one of the clearest examples of a machine designed for a narrow mission and executed with extraordinary intensity.
