Mazda MX-5 (1989 - 1997)

The first-generation MX-5 revived the simple lightweight roadster at a time when the classic British sports-car formula had largely disappeared. Mazda gave it reliability, careful ergonomics and a playful rear-drive chassis, making open-top motoring accessible again.

Its significance is enormous because it proved that a modest sports car did not need huge power to be loved. The NA MX-5’s pop-up headlights, light controls and balance created one of the most successful sports-car lines in history.
